Music Series No.3 "Kaleidoscope" Homage to Paul Patterson.
This was the third painting since I notated the system and I feel it marked
a considerable development. Still based on the square as a single note but now
used more freely and richer in invention. The length of the painting represents
"Time & Space" and I wanted it to be "read" from top left to bottom right. I
experimented with subdivisions of the plane as "bars" with their changes of
mood and changes of mood within the bar. ie. the "bar" top right of the painting
with diagonally striped "field has three variations of the same thematic material,
meshed horizontal lines begin calm and lyrically then develop through to a tense
situation. I also used a continuous line of squares as "sounds" of longer or
shorter duration which were subjected to varied change according to the visual
qualities of the "bars" through which they passed. In addition I used vertical
& horizontal lines as "chords", sliding glissandos and wave forms which together
seemed to create a dynamic work, full of energy and movement reminiscent of
the music.
